Children's Vision

Prairie Vision Center loves children!

Today's children learn more through their eyes than all other senses combined. In fact, 80% of learning takes place through vision.

Children who have a vision problem may have difficulty learning. Don't expect them to tell you that they can't see properly though. Children believe what they see is what everyone is seeing.

Those who scowl, blink excessively, or rub their eyes frequently may have a problem. A child who covers one eye, tilts his head when looking at something specific, holds things close to his eyes, or complains of nausea, dizziness or headaches, may have visual problems. Poor eye-hand coordination, below average reading skills, or short attention span could also be signs of a vision problem.

If a child is demonstrating some of the above signs, it is imperative that the child has their eyes checked by an optometrist.

A vision screening by the school is often mistaken for a comprehensive exam. In reality, the school test does not test for focusing skills, eye tracking skills, and eye teaming skills. Many eye problems are overlooked by these school screenings. For school success it is important your child's visual system is working properly. Glasses for children are more stylish than ever before.

Children who have trouble focusing and poor eye tracking skills may require vision therapy. We can provide a referral to a pediatric optometrist.

For infants aged 6 - 12 months Prairie Vision Center offers no cost InfantSee exams. It will determine that the infants eyes are developing normally and no disease is present.
